Mental Health Counseling
Licensed counselors for talk therapy, life transitions, and ongoing mental health support.
What does a mental health counselor do?
Licensed mental health counselors (LPC, LCMHC, LMHC depending on the state) provide talk therapy for a wide range of concerns: anxiety, depression, grief, stress, relationship issues, life transitions, work burnout, and adjustment difficulties. Most have a master's degree and several years of supervised clinical practice before licensure.
Counselors do not prescribe medication. When medication is part of someone's care, the counselor coordinates with a primary-care provider or a psychiatrist who handles the prescribing side. Many counselors specialize in specific approaches (cognitive behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, solution-focused therapy) or specific populations (adolescents, couples, older adults).
How to choose a mental health counselor
Three things matter most: (1) their training and experience fit what you're working on, (2) they take your insurance (or you can afford the out-of-network rate), and (3) you feel reasonably comfortable with them after the first few sessions. The therapist-client fit is one of the strongest predictors of whether counseling works for a given person; if it isn't clicking after three or four sessions, it's reasonable to try someone else.
If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, do not search a directory. Call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) for free 24/7 support in the U.S., or go to the nearest emergency department.

Frequently asked
What's the difference between a mental health counselor and a psychologist?
Mental health counselors hold a master's-level license (LPC, LCMHC, LMHC) and provide talk therapy. Clinical psychologists hold a doctoral-level license (PhD or PsyD) and can also perform formal psychological assessments. For most ongoing therapy, either is a good fit; for testing or complex diagnostic questions, a psychologist is the typical referral.
Can a mental health counselor prescribe medication?
No. Counselors are not prescribers. When medication is part of a care plan, the counselor will coordinate with your primary-care provider, a psychiatrist, or a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Many people work with both a counselor (for talk therapy) and a prescriber (for medication) at the same time.
Is counseling covered by insurance?
Most commercial plans, Medicare, and many Medicaid plans cover counseling sessions when the counselor is in-network. Confirm coverage and any session caps with your insurer. Some counselors are private-pay only and can provide a superbill for out-of-network reimbursement.
