Licensed Clinical Social Worker
Therapy plus care navigation โ for the whole picture of someone's life.
What does a Licensed Clinical Social Worker do?
Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW, LICSW, or LCSW-C depending on the state) provide talk therapy for the same range of concerns most counselors and psychologists do โ anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, relationship issues, life transitions โ while bringing a stronger emphasis on someone's social and systemic context. Most LCSWs hold a master's in social work (MSW) plus several years of supervised clinical practice before licensure.
Many LCSWs also do care coordination alongside therapy: helping clients access housing or food programs, connecting them with disability services, working with school systems, or coordinating between medical and behavioral-health providers. That practical layer often makes a meaningful difference in care continuity, especially for clients with complex situations.
How to choose an LCSW
Three things matter most: (1) their training and experience match what you're working on (trauma, family dynamics, grief, substance use, working with specific populations), (2) they take your insurance or you can afford the out-of-network rate, and (3) you feel comfortable enough to be honest with them after a few sessions. Therapy works best when the relationship works.
If you are in crisis or having thoughts of harming yourself or someone else, do not search a directory. Call or text 988 (the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline) for free 24/7 support in the U.S., or go to the nearest emergency department.

Frequently asked
What's the difference between an LCSW, a counselor, and a psychologist?
All three can provide therapy. LCSWs hold a master's in social work and often layer in care coordination and systemic context. Licensed counselors (LPC, LCMHC) hold a master's in counseling and focus on talk therapy. Clinical psychologists hold a doctoral degree (PhD or PsyD) and can also perform formal psychological assessments. For most ongoing therapy, any of the three can be a good fit; the right choice depends on your specific concern and the individual provider's experience.
Can an LCSW prescribe medication?
No. LCSWs are not prescribers. When medication is part of a care plan, the LCSW coordinates with your primary-care provider, a psychiatrist, or a psychiatric nurse practitioner. Many people work with both an LCSW (for therapy and coordination) and a prescriber (for medication) at the same time.
Does insurance cover an LCSW?
Most commercial plans, Medicare, and many Medicaid plans cover therapy with an in-network LCSW. Confirm coverage and any session caps with your insurer. Some LCSWs are private-pay only and can provide a superbill for partial out-of-network reimbursement.
