Frequently asked

Do I need an MRI for knee pain?

Often not right away. A clinician starts with your history and an exam and orders imaging when it would change the plan, such as for suspected ligament or cartilage injury. This page is general education, not individual medical advice.

Which provider should I see: physical therapist, sports medicine, or orthopedic surgeon?

For most new knee pain without red flags, a primary-care or sports medicine provider, or a physical therapist, is a sensible start; orthopedic surgeons evaluate structural damage and joints that have stopped responding to conservative care. They refer between each other, and all appear in this directory.

When is knee pain an emergency?

Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department if, after an injury, the knee looks out of position or deformed, you think a bone is broken, the pain is severe, or you heard a pop and can't use the joint. Short of that, call a provider promptly for a knee that can't bear weight, buckles or locks, won't bend or straighten all the way, or that has a fever, redness or warmth around it, or a lot of swelling. Any one of those on its own is reason to call. Don't search a directory in an emergency.

Understanding knee pain

Knees carry your whole load, so they collect problems from several directions: ligament injuries such as ACL tears from sudden twists, tendon injuries, cartilage damage, and osteoarthritis, the most common disease affecting the knee, where cartilage gradually wears down and the joint becomes painful and swollen.

In a running, rucking, jumping community like Fort Bragg, knees log serious mileage. For many knee problems the first steps are conservative: rest, ice, compression, and elevation, sometimes a period of immobilization, then rehabilitation with a physical therapist or physiatrist to rebuild strength and range of motion. A clinician matches the plan to the actual cause.

Finding the right provider near Fort Bragg

A primary-care or sports medicine provider can evaluate a new knee problem and refer onward; physical therapists carry much of the rehabilitation and strengthening work; orthopedic surgeons evaluate structural injuries and arthritis that has stopped responding to conservative care. Service members usually route through their primary care manager, and the guides below cover how specialty referrals work. ProviderQuoHealth shows each provider's credentials, accepted insurance, and accepting-new-patients status so you can compare before you call.

After an injury, go to the nearest emergency department or call 911 if the knee looks out of position or deformed, if you think a bone is broken, if the pain is severe, or if you heard a pop and can't use the joint. Contact a provider promptly, short of that, for a knee that can't bear weight, that buckles or locks, that won't bend or straighten all the way, or that has a fever, redness or warmth around it, or a lot of swelling. Any one of those is reason enough on its own. The same goes for pain, swelling, numbness, or a bluish color in the calf below a sore knee. Don't search a directory in an emergency.
