Arthritis
Providers who treat arthritis: see credentials, insurance, and contact details before you ever call.
Understanding arthritis
Arthritis means joint inflammation, but the word is used broadly for more than 100 conditions that affect the joints and the tissues around them. Common forms include osteoarthritis, the most common type, which involves the breakdown of cartilage in a joint, and rheumatoid arthritis, an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the joints. Symptoms often include joint pain, stiffness, and swelling.
Because there are many types of arthritis, care can involve different providers. A primary-care provider often coordinates care; a rheumatologist specializes in inflammatory and autoimmune forms; physical and occupational therapists help with movement and function; and orthopedic surgeons address some joint problems.
Finding the right provider
A primary-care provider is a common starting point: they can evaluate joint symptoms, begin care, and refer you to a rheumatologist or other specialist when the type of arthritis calls for it. ProviderQuoHealth shows each provider's credentials, accepted insurance, and accepting-new-patients status so you can narrow the list before you call.
Arthritis is usually a long-term condition managed over time rather than an emergency. Still, if you have a sudden, severely painful, hot, or swollen joint, especially with a fever, contact a clinician promptly. For severe symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Don't search a directory.

Frequently asked
What's the difference between osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis?
Osteoarthritis, the most common type, involves the gradual breakdown of cartilage in a joint. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition in which the immune system attacks the joints. A clinician diagnoses the specific type, which guides the kind of care and the type of provider involved.
Do I need a rheumatologist, or can my primary-care provider manage arthritis?
Many people manage arthritis with their primary-care provider, who may refer you to a rheumatologist for inflammatory or autoimmune forms, or to physical therapy or an orthopedic surgeon depending on the situation. These provider types appear in this directory.
Is arthritis treatable?
Arthritis is generally a manageable, long-term condition, and care aims to reduce symptoms and maintain function. The right plan depends on the type and is set by a clinician. This page is general education, not individual medical advice.
