Midwifery
Certified nurse-midwives for prenatal care and birth, in hospitals and birth centers.
What does a midwife do?
Certified nurse-midwives (CNMs) are trained in both nursing and midwifery and provide prenatal care, attend births, and care for mothers after delivery. In the United States they most commonly deliver in hospitals and birth centers, and they typically care for routine, lower-risk pregnancies.
Midwifery works inside a safety net, not outside it: CNMs collaborate with obstetricians, consult when risk rises during a pregnancy, and transfer care when a pregnancy needs a higher level of management. Asking a midwife exactly how that works in their practice, who they consult and where, is one of the best first questions you can ask.
Choosing midwifery care near Fort Bragg
The practical checks mirror any maternity decision: confirm the midwife is in-network with your insurance and accepting new patients (both on every ProviderQuoHealth profile), and confirm the hospital or birth center where they deliver is also in-network. Military families PCSing to the area mid-pregnancy should start booking as soon as orders are in hand; our prenatal-care guide below covers that playbook in detail, and the plan-and-referral guides explain how maternity care is arranged in the military health system.
For urgent symptoms during pregnancy, such as heavy bleeding, severe belly pain, severe headache or vision changes, or a baby moving less than usual, contact your provider immediately; for severe symptoms call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Don't search a directory.

Frequently asked
Is midwifery care safe?
Certified nurse-midwives are licensed clinicians who typically care for routine, lower-risk pregnancies and work in collaboration with obstetricians, consulting or transferring care when risk rises. Whether midwifery fits your pregnancy is a conversation with a clinician; this page is general education.
Do midwives only attend home births?
No. In the United States, certified nurse-midwives most commonly deliver in hospitals and birth centers. Ask any midwife where they deliver and how their collaboration with physicians works.
Can I switch between a midwife and an OB during pregnancy?
Yes, and the system is designed for it: midwives refer to obstetricians when a pregnancy becomes higher risk, and people also switch by preference. Records transfer between providers; ask both practices how they handle the handoff.
