Chiropractic
Hands-on care for spine, joint, and musculoskeletal complaints.
What does a chiropractor do?
Chiropractors evaluate and treat musculoskeletal conditions, focusing on the spine and joints. Most visits center on back pain, neck pain, tension headaches, sciatica, and movement-related complaints. Care typically involves spinal manipulation (adjustments), soft-tissue work, mobilization, and exercise or posture coaching.
A chiropractor's training is doctoral-level (DC) and includes diagnosis, imaging interpretation, and recognizing when a patient should be referred elsewhere. They are licensed to practice independently and most insurance plans cover their care, though usually with a per-visit cap.
When to see a chiropractor vs. another provider
Common reasons people choose a chiropractor: mechanical back or neck pain that hasn't responded to rest and over-the-counter measures, pain after lifting or a minor injury, or wanting a hands-on, exercise-based approach before considering imaging or medication. Chiropractors often co-manage care with primary-care providers and physical therapists.
Some symptoms warrant a primary-care visit or emergency department first, not a chiropractor: sudden severe back pain after a fall, leg weakness or numbness, loss of bladder or bowel control, or pain that wakes you at night. When in doubt, start with your primary-care provider.
Conditions chiropractors commonly help with
Most chiropractic care focuses on musculoskeletal pain, and low back pain is the most common reason people come in. Research reviewed by the NIH's National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health finds that spinal manipulation can ease low back pain and improve everyday function, with benefit comparable to common over-the-counter anti-inflammatory medicine, and the American College of Physicians includes spinal manipulation among its recommended non-drug options for both recent and long-standing low back pain.
Neck pain is another frequent reason to see a chiropractor, including the stiffness and soreness that can follow a strain or a motor-vehicle collision (often called whiplash); research indicates chiropractic care can help relieve neck pain and restore movement. Sciatica-type pain that radiates from the low back into the leg often comes from the same mechanical problems chiropractors routinely evaluate, which is what many people are looking for when they search for help with a pinched nerve.
For headaches, spinal manipulation may bring short-term relief for tension-type headache and can help reduce how often cervicogenic (neck-related) headaches occur and how severe they are, and early research also points to a possible benefit for migraine. Chiropractors often combine hands-on adjustment with heat and ice, electrical stimulation, mobilization, and exercise or posture coaching, and they regularly work alongside primary-care providers and physical therapists. Symptoms such as numbness or tingling can have many causes, so a primary-care provider is a good first stop to pinpoint what is going on and point you toward the right care.

Frequently asked
Does insurance cover chiropractic care?
Most commercial insurance, Medicare, and many Medicaid plans cover chiropractic visits for medically necessary care, typically with a per-visit copay and an annual visit cap. Maintenance or wellness visits are less often covered. Confirm coverage and any required referral with your insurer before your first visit.
How many sessions will I need?
It depends on the complaint. Many acute mechanical issues respond in three to six visits over a few weeks; chronic conditions may need a longer course with tapering frequency. A good chiropractor will set a treatment plan with a clear endpoint and re-evaluate if progress stalls.
Will I need x-rays?
Not always. Imaging is appropriate when there's a suspected fracture, neurologic symptoms, a recent injury, or red-flag findings on exam. Routine x-rays before every spinal adjustment aren't supported by current evidence-based guidelines. Ask why imaging is being recommended if it's offered.
Can a chiropractor help after a car accident?
Yes, many people see a chiropractor for the neck and back pain that can follow a motor-vehicle collision, such as whiplash, and chiropractic care can help relieve that pain and restore movement. If the crash was significant it is wise to be checked for serious injury first, and anyone with severe pain, weakness, numbness, or loss of bladder or bowel control should seek emergency care right away.
Can chiropractic care help with headaches or migraines?
Often, yes. For tension-type headache, spinal manipulation may offer short-term relief, and for cervicogenic (neck-related) headache it can help reduce how often headaches happen and how severe they are. Early research also suggests it may lower the number of migraine days and their intensity. A chiropractor is one good option among several, and it is worth looping in your primary-care provider if headaches are frequent or getting worse.
