What does an audiologist do?

Audiologists evaluate and manage hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and balance problems. A visit typically starts with a hearing evaluation; from there, audiologists fit and program hearing aids, help manage tinnitus, evaluate dizziness, and provide hearing protection guidance. They work alongside ear, nose, and throat (ENT) physicians, who handle the medical and surgical side of ear disease.

Hearing care is a particularly relevant topic around Fort Bragg. Loud noise from weapons, aircraft, and machinery is a well-known cause of hearing loss and tinnitus, so hearing changes and persistent ringing are a common concern for service members and veterans. Audiologists are the specialists who measure what's happening and lay out the options.

When to see an audiologist, and how to choose

Consider a hearing evaluation if conversations feel muffled, you keep turning the volume up, ringing won't fade, or family members notice you're missing things. Seek care promptly for sudden hearing changes. Veterans with service-related hearing concerns can often get evaluations and hearing aids through the veterans health system; the guides below cover enrollment and how to get seen. For everyone else, the practical checks are the usual two: in-network with your insurance and accepting new patients, both shown on every ProviderQuoHealth profile.

If a hearing problem comes with sudden severe dizziness, weakness, trouble speaking, or other stroke-like symptoms, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Don't search a directory.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Do I need a referral to see an audiologist?

Often not, but some insurance plans require one, and hearing-aid benefits vary widely by plan. Check the audiologist's profile for accepted insurance and confirm benefits with your insurer before booking.

What's the difference between an audiologist and an ENT?

Audiologists specialize in testing hearing and balance and in non-medical management such as hearing aids and tinnitus care. ENT physicians diagnose and treat medical conditions of the ear and can operate when needed. The two often work together, and an audiologist will refer you to an ENT when something needs medical attention.

Can anything be done about tinnitus?

Often, yes. While there is no universal cure, audiologists can identify contributing hearing loss and offer management approaches that make tinnitus less intrusive. A clinician will discuss what fits your situation. This page is general education, not individual medical advice.
