Understanding asthma
Asthma is a chronic lung condition in which the airways become inflamed and narrowed, causing wheezing, coughing (often at night or early morning), chest tightness, and shortness of breath. Triggers vary by person: allergens such as pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander; irritants like smoke and pollution; cold air; infections; and exercise.
Asthma care generally uses two kinds of medicine: quick-relief medicines that open airways during symptoms, and daily control medicines that reduce the underlying inflammation. Well-managed asthma should not run your life, and a clinician adjusts the plan until it doesn't.
