Maybe your primary care manager's office is a 40-minute drive from your new place off Fort Bragg. Maybe appointments book out six weeks, or the fit just isn't right. What a PCM is, and who has one
A primary care manager, or PCM, is the provider assigned to you under TRICARE Prime and the other Prime-family plans (Prime Remote, the US Family Health Plan, and the overseas Prime options). Your PCM handles your routine, non-emergency, and urgent care, and refers you to a specialist when you need care they can't provide.
Every branch uses the same term: whether you are Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, or a family member, PCM means the same thing. Your PCM can be a military provider at a facility like Womack Army Medical Center, or a civilian TRICARE network provider out in town.
If you are enrolled in TRICARE Select, you do not have a PCM at all. Select members see any TRICARE-authorized provider without a referral, so there is nothing to change; the sections below apply to Prime-family enrollees.
The three ways to change your PCM
As of July 2026, TRICARE lists three paths (TRICARE: Find/Change My Primary Care Manager):
- Online through milConnect. Log in to milConnect and use Beneficiary Web Enrollment. On the Medical Enrollments tab, choose Change PCM, pick the reason for the change, and select the new provider or facility (milConnect help: Changing Your PCM). This is the fastest path for most families and works at any hour.
- Call your regional contractor. In the TRICARE East Region, which covers North Carolina and Fort Bragg, that is Humana Military at 800-444-5445. In the West Region it is TriWest Healthcare Alliance at 888-874-9378. A phone call is the better route when your situation has a wrinkle, like a provider who shows no openings online.
- Mail the enrollment form. Send a completed TRICARE Prime Enrollment, Disenrollment, and PCM Change form to your regional contractor. You only need to fill out the part of the form related to the PCM change. This is the slowest option, but it exists if you prefer paper.
Before you submit any of the three, call the office you want to switch to and confirm the provider is accepting new patients. TRICARE's own guidance recommends this first step, and it spares you a change request that bounces.
How long the change takes, and when to book
Two timing rules matter.
The request can take up to six days to confirm. TRICARE says a PCM change request may take up to six days to process, and you can check the status of your request by logging in to milConnect (TRICARE: Find/Change My Primary Care Manager, as of July 2026).
Wait for the confirmation before you see the new PCM. Until the change is confirmed, your old PCM is still the provider on record. Care you get elsewhere in the meantime can be treated as out of scope for your plan and cost you more. Book the first appointment with your new PCM after the confirmation shows up, not before.
One more wrinkle for military-facility enrollees: if your requested PCM is at a military hospital or clinic, that facility can approve or deny the request based on its capacity. A denial is not personal; clinics manage enrollment against staffing. If that happens, ask the contractor what nearby options have room, or look at civilian network providers.
Changing your PCM near Fort Bragg

- After a PCS, update DEERS first. Your enrollment follows your address on file.
