What does a pharmacist do?

Pharmacists do far more than dispense prescriptions. They review every prescription you're filling for drug interactions and allergy conflicts; they administer immunizations; they advise on over-the-counter products; they counsel on dose timing, side effects, and missed doses. Many pharmacists do formal medication therapy management (MTM) reviews โ€” sitting down with a patient who takes several medications to make sure everything still makes sense together.

Pharmacists hold a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) โ€” a four-year doctoral degree on top of pre-pharmacy coursework โ€” and pass national and state licensure exams. Some pursue additional residency training in specific clinical areas (oncology, infectious disease, ambulatory care). Beyond the corner drugstore, pharmacists work in hospitals, long-term-care facilities, ambulatory clinics, and on care teams in primary care.

Why a relationship with one pharmacy helps

When all your prescriptions go through one pharmacy, the pharmacist can see the full medication picture and catch interactions another provider might miss. This matters more as the medication list grows โ€” more than 4 in 10 adults over 65 take five or more prescription medications routinely, and the risk of interactions climbs steeply with each addition. For a suspected overdose, accidental ingestion, or a serious reaction, call Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 or 911 right away, don't wait or search a directory.

Pharmacists are also one of the most accessible healthcare providers โ€” no appointment, no copay for a quick consult, walk-in counter access. It's worth using them. If you're starting a new prescription, ask the pharmacist to walk through how to take it, what to watch for, and what to do if you miss a dose. That five-minute conversation prevents a lot of downstream problems.

FAQ

Frequently asked

Can a pharmacist help me save money on my prescriptions?

Often yes. Pharmacists can flag whether a generic equivalent exists, whether a different strength would be cheaper, whether your insurance covers a similar drug in a lower tier, or whether a 90-day fill would lower the per-month cost. Manufacturer coupon and patient-assistance programs are also part of what pharmacists track.

Do pharmacists give vaccines?

Yes, in every state. Pharmacists administer flu, COVID, pneumonia, shingles, and (in most states) most other adult vaccines without requiring a separate doctor visit. Pediatric vaccines are also offered by pharmacies in many states, though age limits vary. Insurance typically covers vaccines at the pharmacy at no copay.

What's the difference between a regular pharmacy and a clinical pharmacist?

Every pharmacist has the same PharmD training. A 'clinical pharmacist' typically works in a hospital, ambulatory clinic, or care-team setting alongside other providers, doing patient-specific medication management as their primary role rather than dispensing. Many community pharmacists also do clinical work โ€” consults, MTM reviews โ€” alongside dispensing.
