What does an OB-GYN do?
Obstetrics and gynecology is a combined specialty: the obstetrics side covers pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the postpartum period; the gynecology side covers the broader range of women's reproductive and pelvic health across the lifespan. Some OB-GYNs practice both, some focus on one (e.g. office-only gynecology, no deliveries), and a few sub-specialize in maternal-fetal medicine, reproductive endocrinology, gynecologic oncology, or urogynecology.
Routine visits typically include a well-woman exam with a pelvic exam and (on an age-and-history-appropriate schedule) Pap testing and HPV screening. OB-GYNs also evaluate and manage conditions like fibroids, endometriosis, ovarian cysts, irregular bleeding, pelvic pain, urinary tract infections, and menopause-related concerns. Many perform in-office and surgical procedures when needed.
When to see an OB-GYN vs. your primary-care provider
Many adult women see both: an OB-GYN for pelvic exams, Pap screening, pregnancy care, and gynecologic concerns, plus a primary-care provider for everything else (cholesterol, blood pressure, general health, non-gynecologic complaints). Family-medicine providers can handle routine gynecologic care including Pap testing for many patients, and some manage uncomplicated pregnancies — what's right depends on your history and preferences.
