What does a nurse practitioner do?
A nurse practitioner (NP) is a registered nurse with a graduate degree (MSN or DNP) and advanced clinical training. NPs diagnose conditions, order and interpret tests, prescribe medications, and manage ongoing care, working in primary care, urgent care, women's health, mental health, and most medical specialties. Many practices use NPs and physicians interchangeably for routine visits.
The scope of independent practice varies by state. In full-practice states, NPs can run their own clinics without physician supervision. In reduced-practice or restricted-practice states, they collaborate with a supervising physician under defined agreements. When you'll typically see a nurse practitioner
NPs handle the routine and the chronic well: annual check-ups, sore throats, prescription refills, blood pressure and diabetes management, women's health visits, mental-health follow-ups, and many specialist visits. For complex or unusual presentations, NPs consult with or refer to physicians on the same care team.
If you have a strong preference about whether your provider is a physician or NP, you can usually request that when you schedule. Most insurance plans cover NP visits at the same copay as a physician visit, though billing can differ behind the scenes.

Is a nurse practitioner as qualified as a doctor?
NPs and physicians complete different training paths but both are licensed independent providers in many contexts. NPs have a strong evidence base for primary care, chronic-disease management, and routine acute care. Physicians have additional training depth, especially for complex diagnoses and procedures. Most practices use both, matching the provider to the visit type.
Can a nurse practitioner prescribe medication?
Yes, including controlled substances in most states (with state-specific restrictions on certain DEA schedules). NPs prescribe across the full range of conditions they treat. Your pharmacy will fill an NP prescription the same way it fills a physician prescription.
Will my insurance cover a visit with a nurse practitioner?
Yes, in nearly all cases when the NP is in-network. Coverage and copay are typically the same as for a physician visit. Confirm with your insurer if you're booking with a specific NP rather than the practice broadly.
