What does an internist do?
Internal medicine physicians — internists — provide primary care for adults, typically age 18 and up. They handle preventive care, vaccines, chronic-disease management (diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, asthma, kidney disease), undiagnosed symptoms that don't fit a single specialty, and coordination of care across multiple specialists for people with several conditions at once.
Internists complete a three-year residency focused entirely on adult medicine, which makes them especially comfortable with patients who have a thick chart, several medications, or a diagnostic puzzle that hasn't resolved with simpler care.
Internal medicine vs. family medicine
Both are primary-care specialties, but internal medicine sees only adults, while family medicine treats every age, including children.
