What does a general dentist do?
General dentists are the primary-care providers of oral health. They handle exams and cleanings, fillings, crowns, basic extractions, root canals on straightforward teeth, dental sealants, fluoride treatments, simple cosmetic work (whitening, bonding), and the management of common gum issues. They also refer to specialists (oral surgeons, periodontists, orthodontists, endodontists) when a case needs sub-specialty care.
Most adults should see a general dentist at least twice a year for cleaning and a routine exam. People with gum disease, frequent cavities, or other risk factors may need more frequent visits.
Choosing a dental practice
Insurance fit matters a lot in dentistry — many plans only cover in-network providers at the full benefit level, and dental insurance has annual caps that make out-of-network costs sting. Always confirm in-network status before booking. The provider profiles below list accepted dental plans.

Do dentists accept medical insurance?
No — dental coverage is almost always a separate plan from medical insurance. Some medical plans cover dental work that's medically necessary (e.g., reconstruction after trauma), but routine cleanings, fillings, and crowns go through dental insurance or out-of-pocket.
How often should I get my teeth cleaned?
Most adults: every 6 months. People with gum disease, frequent cavities, smokers, and people with certain medical conditions (diabetes, heart disease) often need cleanings every 3–4 months. Your dentist will recommend the right cadence.
