First things first: emergencies don't start with a directory
If you or someone near you has an emergency, such as chest pain, trouble breathing, stroke signs like face drooping, arm weakness, or trouble speaking, severe bleeding, or a serious injury, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department immediately. Don't search a directory, and don't drive yourself if it isn't safe.
Emergency medicine physicians are the doctors who staff emergency departments. They're trained to evaluate and stabilize anything that comes through the door, from life-threatening illness and trauma to problems that turn out to be minor, and to decide who needs admission, urgent specialty care, or safe discharge home.
ER, urgent care, or a regular appointment?
A practical rule of thumb: possible threats to life, limb, or vision belong in the emergency department; same-day problems that can't wait for an appointment but aren't dangerous, like minor cuts, sprains, or common infections, often fit urgent care; and ongoing or routine concerns belong with a primary-care provider. When in doubt about a serious symptom, choose the emergency department.

Can I pick which emergency physician I see?
No; emergency departments assign the physicians on shift. What you can choose is where you go, when it's safe to choose, and who handles your follow-up care afterward. This directory helps with the follow-up side: finding local providers who are accepting new patients.
What should I do after an ER visit?
Read your discharge instructions, fill any prescriptions, and book the recommended follow-up promptly, usually with a primary-care provider or a specialist. If symptoms return or worsen, go back to the emergency department or call 911. Don't wait on a directory in an emergency.
