Frequently asked

What usually causes a toothache?

Common causes include tooth decay reaching sensitive layers, a cracked tooth, an abscess (infection), an impacted tooth, or gum problems. A dentist finds the cause with an exam and X-rays and treats what's actually wrong. This page is general education, not a diagnosis.

Can I manage tooth pain at home until my appointment?

Somewhat. MedlinePlus lists warm saltwater rinses and over-the-counter pain relievers for an abscessed tooth, and one thing not to do: do not place aspirin directly on your tooth or gums, which irritates the tissue and can cause mouth ulcers. None of that treats the cause. For an abscess MedlinePlus is explicit about why: the toothache may stop if pressure is relieved, but the infection will remain active and continue to spread. Book promptly, and ask the practice how soon they can see you when you describe the pain.

When is tooth pain an emergency?

Swelling that is spreading, or that affects swallowing or breathing: call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. A swollen area of the upper or lower jaw, even without those: MedlinePlus calls that a very serious symptom and says untreated abscesses can become life-threatening. It gives no routing for it, so this page says go to an emergency department or urgent care unless a dentist can see you immediately. A knocked-out permanent tooth: contact a dentist right away and bring the tooth, held by the crown and kept moist. If you cannot close your upper and lower teeth together, your jaw may be broken and that needs help right away at a dentist or hospital. Don't search a directory in an emergency.

Understanding tooth pain

Toothaches usually have a findable cause: tooth decay that has reached sensitive layers, a cracked or damaged tooth, an abscess (infection at the root), an impacted tooth pushing where there's no room, or gum problems around the tooth. For an abscess specifically, MedlinePlus names the signal to contact your dentist: a throbbing toothache that does not go away, or a bubble or pimple on the gums.

Treatment depends on the cause: fillings for cavities, root canal treatment when infection reaches the inside of the tooth, extraction when a tooth can't be saved. The right starting point is a dentist, and this directory lists general dentists along with the specialists they refer to, including endodontists (root canal specialists) and oral surgeons.

Getting seen near Fort Bragg, and when it can't wait

Call a dental practice, describe the pain, and ask to be seen urgently; practices triage tooth pain every day. For military families new to the area after a PCS, finding a dentist fast matters more than finding the perfect one; records can follow later. Dental coverage is usually billed separately from medical insurance, and what is covered varies by plan, so confirm the details when you book. ProviderQuoHealth shows credentials and contact details for the area's dental providers so you can compare before you call.

Two situations outrank a dental appointment. MedlinePlus calls a swollen area of the upper or lower jaw a very serious symptom, and says untreated tooth abscesses can lead to life-threatening complications. It does not say where to go for it. This page therefore takes the cautious route rather than leaving you to guess: treat that swelling as urgent, and go to an emergency department or urgent care unless a dentist can see you immediately. If the swelling is spreading, or you have trouble swallowing or breathing, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department now. And for a knocked-out permanent tooth, contact your dentist right away: MedlinePlus says the longer you wait, the less chance there is for your dentist to fix it. Handle it only by the crown, never the root, don't let it dry out, and bring it with you, either sitting back in its socket, held between your lower lip and gum, or covered in a little cow's milk. Don't search a directory in an emergency.
