Understanding insomnia and sleep disorders

Insomnia means trouble falling asleep, staying asleep, or both, leaving you short on rest even when you have the time for it. Short-term (acute) insomnia lasts days to weeks and often follows stress; chronic insomnia lasts a month or longer and is frequently secondary to something else: another condition, a medication, substances like caffeine or alcohol, shift work, or another sleep disorder such as sleep apnea.

That 'secondary' point drives good care: fixing sleep usually means finding what's underneath it, not just chasing sleep itself.

Finding the right provider

A primary-care provider is the right first stop: they screen for underlying causes, coach the sleep-habit foundations, and refer onward, to cognitive behavioral therapy (which can help with chronic insomnia), to a sleep study when apnea is suspected, or to sleep-medicine specialists. Medication has a role a clinician can weigh with you. ProviderQuoHealth shows credentials, accepted insurance, and accepting-new-patients status on every profile.

Sleep problems are rarely emergencies, but drowsy driving is genuinely dangerous: treat severe daytime sleepiness as a safety problem. For sudden severe symptoms of any kind, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Don't search a directory.

FAQ

Frequently asked

When does trouble sleeping deserve a provider visit?

When it persists for weeks, affects your daytime functioning, or comes with loud snoring and gasping (which points toward sleep apnea). A primary-care provider screens for what's underneath and routes you to the right care.

Is there treatment for chronic insomnia besides sleeping pills?

Yes; cognitive behavioral therapy can help with chronic insomnia, alongside sleep-habit changes and treating underlying causes. Medication is one tool among several, weighed with a clinician. This page is general education, not a treatment recommendation.

How do I know if it's insomnia or sleep apnea?

They overlap: apnea often announces itself with loud snoring, gasping, and heavy daytime sleepiness, and is diagnosed with a sleep study. A provider sorts this out; our sleep-apnea page covers that path in detail.
