Care in Fayetteville

The Fayetteville healthcare market is shaped by three anchors: Cape Fear Valley Health, the regional referral system operating Cape Fear Valley Medical Center; Fort Bragg, the largest Army installation in the country, whose Womack Army Medical Center makes TRICARE acceptance a defining feature of the local network; and the Methodist University area east of the medical center, which holds the densest concentration of independent practices.

TRICARE participation matters for a large share of patients here because of the Fort Bragg community. Each provider's profile shows their contact information so you can confirm coverage before booking.

Understanding high blood pressure

High blood pressure, also called hypertension, means the pressure of blood pushing against the walls of the arteries is consistently too high. It usually has no symptoms, which is why it's often called a "silent" condition and why regular checks matter. Over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure raises the risk of serious problems such as heart disease, stroke, and kidney damage.

Blood pressure is measured with two numbers: systolic, the first, and diastolic, the second. CDC puts normal below 120/80 mm Hg and calls it high blood pressure when it is consistently at or above 130/80, and a clinician diagnoses it from readings over time rather than a single measurement. Care commonly involves lifestyle steps and, when needed, medication, and is most often managed by a primary-care provider.

Finding the right provider

Most high blood pressure is managed by a primary-care provider, who monitors readings, discusses lifestyle steps, and may prescribe medication when appropriate. A clinician may refer you to a cardiologist or other specialist for blood pressure that's hard to control or for related heart concerns. ProviderQuoHealth shows each provider's credentials, accepted insurance, and accepting-new-patients status so you can rule out mismatches before you call.

Very high blood pressure can become an emergency, and the trigger is the symptoms, not a number on a cuff. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for chest pain or a crushing pressure in the chest, shortness of breath, a headache, blurred vision, confusion or unusual sleepiness, a seizure, nausea and vomiting, or numbness or weakness in an arm, leg, or the face. Don't stop to take a reading first, and don't talk yourself out of it because the last reading looked normal. Stroke signs are a 911 call in their own right: one side of the face drooping, one arm drifting down when both are raised, or slurred speech. So are heart-attack symptoms, and MedlinePlus says to call even if you are not sure it is one. Short of that, if you know your blood pressure is high and not under control, CDC says talk with your health care team right away. Don't search a directory in an emergency.

Common questions

Does high blood pressure have symptoms?

Usually not. High blood pressure often has no warning signs, which is why it's sometimes called a "silent" condition and why regular checks are important. A clinician diagnoses it from readings taken over time rather than a single measurement.

Who manages high blood pressure?

It's most often managed by a primary-care provider, who monitors your readings and discusses lifestyle steps and, when appropriate, medication. A clinician may refer you to a cardiologist for blood pressure that's hard to control or for related heart concerns. Both provider types appear in this directory.

When is high blood pressure an emergency?

The symptoms decide it, not the reading. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department for chest pain or crushing chest pressure, shortness of breath, a headache, blurred vision, confusion or unusual sleepiness, a seizure, nausea and vomiting, or numbness or weakness in an arm, leg, or the face. Stroke signs (face drooping, one arm drifting down, slurred speech) and heart-attack symptoms are each a 911 call on their own, whether or not you have a cuff and whether or not the reading looks normal. If you simply know your blood pressure is high and not under control, that is not a 911 call: CDC says talk with your health care team right away. Don't search a directory in an emergency.
