Either works; audiologists test hearing and manage hearing aids and tinnitus, while ENTs treat medical causes, and they refer to each other routinely. A hearing evaluation is the practical first step. Both provider types appear in this directory.
Is hearing loss reversible?
It depends on the type: conductive causes (sound being blocked) are often treatable, while sensorineural loss is usually permanent, and hearing aids and other supports are the usual way it is managed, with how much they help varying from person to person. A clinician determines the type with an evaluation.
When are hearing changes urgent?
Sudden hearing loss is a medical emergency in NIDCD's own words, and it says to visit a doctor immediately. That is because the treatment window is short: steroids work best as soon as possible, and treatment delayed more than two to four weeks is less likely to reverse or reduce permanent loss. Don't wait out an unexplained hearing drop that came on over hours or a few days, in one ear or both. Hearing loss alongside stroke signs, face drooping, weakness, trouble speaking, means 911 or the nearest emergency department. Don't search a directory in an emergency.
Understanding hearing loss
Hearing loss has many causes: long-term exposure to loud noise, aging, heredity, ear infections, trauma, and certain medications. It comes in two broad types: sensorineural (damage to the inner ear or auditory nerve, usually permanent) and conductive (sound blocked from reaching the inner ear, often treatable or reversible).

NIDCD says to consider sudden deafness symptoms a medical emergency and visit a doctor immediately: an unexplained, rapid loss of hearing all at once or over a few days, often in one ear, sometimes noticed on waking or after a loud pop, and sometimes with ear fullness, dizziness or ringing. Its reason is the treatment window: steroids work best used as soon as possible, and NIDCD says treatment delayed more than two to four weeks is less likely to reverse or reduce permanent hearing loss. So see a doctor immediately, as NIDCD puts it, and if you cannot be seen straight away go to urgent care or an emergency department rather than waiting for an appointment. If hearing loss comes with stroke signs such as face drooping, weakness, or trouble speaking, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department. Don't search a directory in an emergency.
