What's the difference between type 1 and type 2 diabetes?
In type 1 diabetes the immune system attacks and destroys the cells in the pancreas that make insulin, so insulin treatment is required. In type 2 diabetes (the most common form) the body's cells stop using insulin properly and the pancreas may not make enough to keep up; it's managed with lifestyle changes and may include oral medicines or insulin. A clinician diagnoses the type with blood tests.
Do I need an endocrinologist, or can my primary-care provider manage diabetes?
Many people manage type 2 diabetes well with their primary-care provider. A clinician may refer you to an endocrinologist for type 1 diabetes, blood sugar that's hard to control, or complications. Both kinds of providers appear in this directory.
How often should diabetes be checked?
It varies by person and type. The guidance from NIDDK is that people with diabetes have an A1C test, which reflects longer-term blood sugar, at least twice a year, and more often if treatment goals aren't being met. Diabetes care also tracks blood pressure, cholesterol, and kidney health over time, with a dilated eye exam at least once a year, a foot check at each visit, and a dental visit at least once a year. What happens if I'm diagnosed with gestational diabetes?
Gestational diabetes develops during pregnancy, and most of the time it goes away after the baby is born. Having had it raises the chance of developing type 2 diabetes later in life, so a clinician will keep checking your blood sugar after delivery. Understanding diabetes
Diabetes is a group of conditions where blood glucose (blood sugar) stays higher than normal because the body either does not make enough insulin or cannot use it well. The main types are type 1 (the body makes little or no insulin), type 2 (the most common form, where the body resists insulin over time), and gestational diabetes (which develops during pregnancy).
Well-managed diabetes care usually involves a primary-care provider or endocrinologist, and often a team (diabetes educators, dietitians, eye and foot specialists, and others) because diabetes affects many parts of the body over time.

Very high and very low blood sugar can both turn into emergencies, and they look nothing alike.
